Tech.Ed Developers 2006, about as geeky as it gets

Having experienced the delights of Rome for EMC’s Momentum 2006 a few weeks ago I’m now in Barcelona for Microsoft’s Tech.Ed Developers 2006.

There are about 4,500 geeks here all wanting to ‘get ahead of the game’ on topics such as Vista, Office 2007 System, .NET 3.0 (and rumours of .NET 3.5) and development in general. All in all the conference is extremely well presented, Microsoft’s ample marketing budget clearly buys them a lot of showmanship. But it’s the way that these guys present that makes the difference I think.

Yesterday Clemens Vasters and Steve Swartz did a great overview of the Microsoft Application Platform giving a potted history of MS MTS through COM+, Enterprise Services and onward to Windows Communication Foundation. The guys did a now classic tet-a-tet of both verbal pats on the back and verbal slappings. Roy Osherove when one further in his talk on Agile methodologies and actually sang a song while playing guitar about offshore development. Most entertaining, but I can’t see it challenging McFly for the minds and wallets of the teeny boppers.

Apart from the fact that the air conditioning in my hotel reduced the temperature to one that could freeze carbonite and now I have a bad throat and a runny nose Barcelona os treating the delegates well. I’m off to try to get some time with the guys at the Microsoft booth now to talk to them about Office 2007 System. I wonder if they know how much I’ve probably done to increase their sales of MOSS 2007 in this last few weeks. Ha! :-)
