Shirebrook destroyed by Romulans

No, nothing to do with Star Trek. Shirebrook Town FC (check out the website, it’s.. er.. well, see for yourself) were thoroughly hammered by Romulus FC on Saturday 6 - 0 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup (sponsored by E.ON.. he he). Romulus are currently second in the Midland Alliance League behind Leamington of all teams. However, Darius Vassell once played for Romulus (who play out of Sutton Coldfield). Still, my old school mate Tony Starkey used to play for Shirebrook Town… so there.

Warning! The Wikipedia entry for Shirebrook Town says that they play out of Mansfield. This is not true and could be tantamount to calling someone from the Basque country Spanish. Needless to say I’m not happy about this. Afterall, Shirebrook’s most famous son John Hurt (yes, he of Alien chest bursting fame) would certainly agree with me.

There’s no match report yet on the Shirebrook Town website. But then again there’s not much of anything on the website. I once tried to procure a Shirebrook Town FC shirt (yes in mighty red and black) but the as then manager, who was an old friend’s next door neighbour, told me that there were only 14 shirts in existence. Apparently you can now buy them from the club shop which is basically ‘The Staff’ public house on Langwith Road in Shirebrook.

So my home team will progress no further in this year’s competition; blast. I see that Matlock Town got through though against Bedford United. I once went to Matlock to watch the team while my friend Chris was playing for them. It’s the only ground in the country I think where the corners have to be taken from on top of a mound which is about three feet higher than the rest of the pitch. Chris did nearly score from a corner that day though.

Well, we’ll see if Mansfield can beat Portsmouth in the League Cup tomorrow. Come on Stags!
