Blogger, my old friend

April 27th 2001. My first blog post. Guaranteed it was much later when I really got into the blogging habit. However, I did have few other attempts:

  • My original blog was at mental.blogspot.com but this has since been retired (taken over by menori) and the URL has now been adopted by someone else.
  • The was ‘Life’ at gazblog.blogspot.com which was really the making of menori.
  • I also dabbled with a blog entitled Biple (explanation on the site) which was also something of a menori precursor. The postings included my first discovery of Skype in September 2003. biple.blogspot.com
  • There was my failed Pocket PC blog at ppc.blogspot.com. Complete with nonsense posting that was actually from an iPAQ at the time.
  • Then there came shirebrook.org (a domain I once owned by I think I forgot to renew) at shirebrook.blogspot.com. Shirebrook being my home town. The blog only needed one posting.
  • I was once asked to do some research for an old work colleague who had set up her own consultancy. Rather than email my finding over to her I decided to put the knowledge onto a blog called Kayem (phonetic for KM - knowledge management) at kayem.blogspot.com. There were a flurry of postings during early 2004 whilst I was doing the research. But even that didn’t sustain.

So why all this reminiscing? Well I’ve been trying the new Blogger beta. It still remains far from what you can achieve with WordPress but it is still a very accessible tool and now has features to allow you to better arrange your template. And indeed this posting was originally put together in the new blogger beta (complete with Google Account authentication).

I’m hoping that Google really do something with Blogger. Once upon a time it was a flagship blogging tool. Since Google bought it I get the distinct impression it’s been neglected. Writely + Blogger + AdSense + some of the flexibility and power of WordPress = a very promising blog stable.

I’ve had nothing but trouble with the beta. And wordpress still looks so much better.

Oh yes. The Blogger beta in it’s current form is still a long way away from the capabilities of WordPress. WordPress still requires some knowledge of web development in order to get the best out of it. New templates for WordPress such as Sandbox allow you to customise all manner of aspects of the look and feel of your blog. However, it still requires fairly detailed knowledge of CSS to get the best right. In my experience CSS takes a long time to get right and is more ‘trial and error’ than anything.

Let’s see what the release version of the new Blogger handles like. However, now owned by Google I don’t see it ever coming out of beta :-)

And yes, your WordPress site looks much better than the blogspot one.

p.s. If I find someone who knows how to make a Gollum costumes I’ll be sure to let you know.
