Windows ‘Asta la’ Vista

I was bored.. so I decided to install Windows Vista Beta 2 via Virtual PC 2004 SP1 on my Shuttle-PC. The current MSDN version is now a ‘Vista’ build rather than Longhorn.

This article helped:

Help with building the partition. I used option 3 and got Virtual PC to do it. I didn’t seem to ever get Option 1 using Diskpart to work. It kept telling me I had insufficient space.

Vista Beta 2 is an enormous 16GB to install and takes about 50 minutes. I tried Longhorn a while back and was unimpressed (it was XP with a ’slate’ roof). Lets see what the new flavour is like.

Vijay. Can’t help you there I’m afraid. My product key worked for me when I installed the latest build. But that was because it was emailed to me as part of the beta.

I do know that different stages of beta and individual builds have different license key ranges so an old one wont work with a new build. Ensure you’re using the right key with the right build.

    Kalum,

I’ve edited your comment slightly to remove the actual license key you posted in. If the license key is valid (and I can’t check that) then it should be all you need to complete your Vista Beta 2 install.

Having spoken to some friends who are also Beta testing Vista they’ve told me that license keys issued as part of the public Beta (which now appears to have been closed by Microsoft) are still valid with the July CTP. I didn’t, however, use the public Beta code I was given when I installed the July CTP as I used a Windows Vista Ultimate key for that build as part of an MSDN subscription (which, unless you’re on the official Vista beta programme is the only way to key an ‘official’ Vista beta license.

I’m not in the business of providing license keys (that’s Microsoft’s job) as that would be construed as software theft.

Just to clarify. I’m not in the business of distributing product keys. My suggestion would be to get the latest Vista RC1 release and contact Microsoft about getting a key as part of the public beta.
